This guide shows how to remove background from video with a clearly visible person using a browser-local video background remover. Guests can start without an account for three free tasks per day; signing in allows six total tasks per day across all local tools. There is no added watermark. Inspect the transparent result before using it in an edit.

## Start with a suitable clip

Choose a short MP4 or WebM with a clearly visible person. Good lighting and a visible outline make the result easier to inspect. This preview handles people; products, pets and arbitrary objects are outside its scope.

Input must be nonempty, no larger than 2 GB, no longer than 120 seconds, and within the pixel count of 3840 × 2160. It must have one video track and at most one audio track. Additional input/output frame, pixel-work and memory budgets apply even to clips within those limits; see [current limits](https://cutoutup.com/help#limits). A supported container does not guarantee that your browser can decode the codec inside it.

## 1. Open the video background remover and choose a clip

Open the [video background remover](https://cutoutup.com/#video-workbench) and select a local file. The tool checks the media and browser capabilities before enabling processing. Read the detected duration, original dimensions, audio status and intended output size.

Your selected video and audio stay in the browser. The site downloads the portrait model and runtime files; it does not upload your media for this workflow.

## 2. Choose a processing mode

**Fast** is the default lightweight portrait segmentation model. **Detailed edges** uses a larger portrait matting model and preserves partial opacity rather than applying the fast model's confidence cutoff. In our two public test clips it recovered more shoe and hair detail; this is not a guarantee for other clips or a claim that it beats every competitor.

Detailed mode is recommended for desktop and downloads 35–50 MiB on first use. Tested Chromium workers can use GPU acceleration. Safari and Firefox use a CPU path, which can take several minutes even for short clips; the tool shows the active path after loading. Try a short sample first, or choose Fast for lower resource use. Detailed mode includes local foreground-color estimation at supported edges to reduce background-color fringes. It keeps the model’s alpha and leaves ambiguous colors alone; fine halos can remain. It does not add temporal stabilization.

## 3. Remove video background on your device

Select the processing button. The first run loads the model, then processes and encodes frames. The last stage verifies the actual export, including alpha, complete frame count, duration and supported audio. A full progress bar alone does not mean the output is ready.

Processing speed depends on your clip and device. Keep the page open and use the cancel control if you need to stop. Closing or refreshing clears the task; there is no server job to resume.

## 4. Inspect the result

The checkerboard preview is drawn from the exported WebM. Play it and seek to several timestamps. Check hair, hands, clothing edges and moments of fast motion or occlusion. Missing regions or unstable boundaries can occur with either portrait model.

Listen to the audio as well. A silent source stays silent; a supported source audio track is retained or converted to Opus. If the browser cannot preserve audio, the task fails instead of creating a silent replacement.

## 5. Download and use it

Download the WebM before leaving the page. The output uses VP9 video with alpha, with Opus audio when the source has supported audio. Dimensions preserve the aspect ratio, do not upscale, and are limited to a 720p bounding box; the frame rate is limited to 30 fps.

Test the clip in your actual editor. A black player background is not enough to assess transparency. Follow the [transparent WebM guide](https://cutoutup.com/transparent-webm-guide) to place the clip over a colored layer.

## If a step fails

Read [help and troubleshooting](https://cutoutup.com/help), or check [browser and format support](https://cutoutup.com/help#browser-support). Error states do not create a successful download.
